Great Schism

(Is after Charlemagne and before William the Conqueror, computer messed it up, sorry)
Interview with Justinian
Q: What was the capital of the Byzantine Empire?
A: Constantinople. I built the Hagia Sophia there.

Q: What was the Justinian code?
A: I collected, revised, and organized laws of Ancient Rome, thus creating "Body of Civil Law." Autocracy comes out of this code.

Q: What is Autocracy?
A: It means that the Emperor and Christ's co-ruler on Earth, which gives you power and spirtiual authority. This led to the diffrences of east and west.

Q: What were the diffrences?
A: Well, the claims of authority for one. East (Byzantine Empire) believed in the Patriarch, while the West believed in the Pope. The use of Icons were different...

Q: What are "Icons"?
A: They are graven images, like images of Mary, of Jesus on the cross, things like that. The Roman Catholic Church believed that using these images made you believe in them, AKA Mary and the cross, instead of believing in God. In other words, they were religous figures. The Roman Catholic Church banned them.

Q: Any other major diffrences?
A: Marriage, and lanuguage. The east spoke Greek, and the west Latin.

Q: When was the Great Schism, and what happened?
A: It happened in 1054 East and west excommunicated eachother. This led to a branch in Christianity, which was huge! The East became Orthidox, and West became Roman Catholic.

Q: I heard there was a third branch, could you tell me a little about that?
A: Ahh yes, the Protesants. This came around much later with Martin Luther.

Q: Why did this branch come around?
A: In Wittenberg, Germany, Johann Tetzel was offering indulgences on the steps of a church. This angered Luther and he wrote 95 theses on why indulgences were bad. This gave him an audience, and when he refused to recant, no one could kill him because he was so popular. In 1530 , the Protestant branch was formed.

A: I was a military commander, and my general was Pompey.

Q: What did you do in 58 B.C.E?
A: I set out with an army for 9 years. Pompey behind my back persuaded a senate order to disband my army and send me home.

Q: What did you do then?
A: I defied the order! And then I secretly led my army across the Rubicon River in Northern Italy, and crushed Pompey and his supporters.

Q: Wow. Revenge?
A: Ah yes. And then I forced the senate to make me dictator. What a feat. I, of course, kept the senate and other republic things in tact, although I was the absolute ruler.

Q: So then what?
A: Well I did what anyone would do, made my self noticeable. Between 48-44 B.C.E I pushed through a number of reforms. I launched public works to employ the jobless, and gave public land to the poor. I also granted citizenship to more people. Plus, I introduced present day's calendar!

Q: So, if you had done so much good, why did people want to kill you?

Q: Why did you convert?
A: Not many believe me, but I saw a sign. In my dream.

Q: Can you elaborate?
A: Well, it was during the battle when I was trying to reunite the western part of the Roman Empire. "In [my] sleep the Christ of God appeared to [me] with the sign which [I] had seen in the heavens, and commanded [me] to make a likeness of the sign which he had seen in the heavens, and to use it as a safe guard in all engagements with [my] enemies."

Q: And this changed your aspect?
A: Well of course. God told me I would be under the protection of the cross, so if I converted all of Rome would be under the protection too! It was my imperial duty!

Q: Thank-you so much for your insight fullness.

Rome Sacked/ Falls to Barbarians

Interview with King Clovis
Q: How did Rome fall?
A: The Visigoths. They were strong, and they were a cunning barbarian group. Led by Alaric, who died in 410, short after capturing Rome.

Q: How did they manage to capture Rome?
A: They starved them out! It took nearly 2 years, people were eating people, the whole thing was horrible! And then the Visigoths invaded and took Rome. Yet, without any food, Rome didn't seem interesting anymore. After Alaric's death, the Visigoths leave. But now other barbarian groups are coming in and trying to take Rome.

Q: What Happened to Rome?
A: It fell to the Dark ages.

Q: Where do you come into this?
A: I was King Clovis, King of the Franks! In 496 I too tried to take Rome, and converted to Christianity as Constantine had a while back. it worked, they accepted me because of it. After uniting France, I died. Sad story...

Q: Why was you converting to Christianity such a big deal?
A: Well after the dark ages began, there was no more Rom unifying the people. There was one thing and one thing only that held the people together. Can you guess what it is?

Q: I have no idea, what was it?
A: The Church! It was the single thread that held people together and gave them hope for the future!

Battle of Tours

Interview with Charles "The Hammer"
Q: What exactly was the Battle Of Tours?
A: Well, it was a battle between the Christians and Muslims, the Muslims were trying to take over France. They were expecting an easy victory, but I wasn't about to give the, one.

Q: What did you do?
A: I gathered in army of course! I trained country men to fight, every Christian was willing to sacrifice their life in order to protect France. God bless them.

Q: The Muslims were expecting an easy win I presume?
A: Well duh! They thought we were unarmed! Boy, were they wrong. Upon our two armies meeting outside of Tours, it took 6 days for the battle to actually begin.

Q: And when it did?
A: We didn't start out too good. No, not at all. Towards the end I had my army run towards the Muslims tents, which made them believe they were fleeing. When Abdul, there leader, tried to stop them, I made sure he was surrounded and killed. That I believe is what secured our victory and made sure that France stayed Christian.

Charlemagne

Interview with Charlemagne
Q: Who is your grandfather?
A: Charles "the Hammer" who took place in the Battle of Tours. He died in 768, and my brother and I split the kingdom.

Q: What did you do upon becoming emperor?
A: Tried to bring Rome out of the dark ages. I might not have succeeded, but I brought a little light back. Enough to bring hope.

Q: What were your acts?
A: At first I launched 50 military campaigns. Then I came up with this great idea to convert everyone to Christianity. Anyone who was not Christian was sentences to death. Harsh but affective, considering it united Rome, at least more than it was.

Q: what did you do after this?
A: I divided Rome into 350 countries. I would travel around and check country rulers, so I wasn't just stuck in a tower all the time. I also began a royal school where all classes were accepted, so everyone could get an education! I could also read and write!

Q:Thanks for your time! :)

William the Conqueror

Interview with William.

Q: Why William the conqueror?
A: As in what gave me that name? Well in 1066 during the battle of Hastings, and I beat Harold and was crowned king of England. Being Duke of Normandy, that makes me, to this day, the last conqueror of Europe.

Q: How did you get control of new land?
A: Easy. I granted fiefs to Norman lords, to churches, kept some land for myself, monitored the castles, and all vassels swore their allegiance to me. SO BAM.

Q: wow. Well, anyways, what did you do with all that land?
A: Ahh, brilliant question. So brilliant. I asked myself that a lot... thought for hours about it... tried to dream the answer in my sleep. It never came...

Q:So you didn't do anything?
A: No. I did something great, although it sounds... bad. The Doomsday Book.

Q: What is the Doomsday book?
A: Well, it's a census of the kingdom, of all the people, property, buildings and livestock. I belive it brought along the present day executive branch.

Q: Thank-you for your time.

Crusades

Interview with Pope Urban II
Q:What is your signinfigance?
A: I called for the crusades in 1095. The soilders were bored from not fighting, and that's all they were trained to do. I thought we might as well do something useful.

Q: How long did the Crusades last?
A: There was 9 of them and they lasted for 200 years.

Q: What was the greatest impact of the Crusades?
A: You don't know? They brought Europe out of the dark ages! That was huge! It was amazing, Europe has been in these dark ages while everyone else was in their finest, finally letting Europe join the rest of the world, well it changed people's lives.

Q: How exactly did they bring Europe out of the Dark Ages? Normally a war seems like something people in the dark ages wouldn't begin...
A: That's why it was so big, no one else would have thought of it! The crusades brought the rebirth of trade, they brought an opening of knowledge back. It forced people to see the West that use to be ours, which inspired people to create. People began to show strong interests in the arts, great feats were made in Science, math, Architecture... Roads and protective walls were rebuilt.

Q: What did all of this greatness lead too?
A: This was the beginning of the Renisance!

Magna Carta

Interview with King John.
Q: King John, do you believe the people disliked you?
A: Why, yes. I mean, I messed up a lot. I don't believe they totally "disliked" me.

Q: What exactly were your mistakes?
A: Well... I lost a lot of land, I lost the power struggle with the pope, I lost against the nobles...

Q: What happened after all of this?
A: Well, the Barons rebelled against my high taxes and "violation of right." They had no idea what they were talking about, those stupid...

Q: Let me cut in... you say they rebelled? Did they win this rebellion?
A: Well of course they did! They forced me to sign this Magna Carta junk in 1215.

Q:And what did this Magna Carta state, and what do you believe is it's impact on the world today?
A: The Magna Carta stated the rights of Barons, and that the King must obey the law. Also includes the due process of law, which are rules the government must follow and makes King agree not to raise taxes without consulting Parliament. Thus, the Magna Carta began what is today known as the Legislative branch.

Q:Thank-you for your time King John.
A: Well I'm dead, nothing better to do.

Columbus Leaves Spain

Interview with Christopher Columbus.
Q: So, Christopher, when were you born?
A: I was born in 1451.

Q: How many voyages did you go on, when were they, and how long were they?
A: Wow, that's a lot of questions. Well, I was 42 when I made my first voyage to the "New world." It was August 3rd, 1492. It lasted for... about 224 days. We were in the new world for 94 days, and the purpose was to search for wealth and self-enrichment. The next voyage began September 25th, 1493. We arrived at Dominica in the Lesser Antilles. We came back to Spain June 11, 1496. The purpose of this voyage was colonization. The third voyage began May 30, 1498 and we arrived in Trinidad in Lesser Antilles. We arrived in Spain in November of 1500. On the fourth and final voyage, we left Spain May 11, 1502 and came back November 7, 1502.

Q: What were the reasons behind the voyages?
A: Well, part of it was to find a route to the Indies that would make trading between Spain and the Indies less time consuming.

Q: What was the other part?
A: I had authority to declare any lands that I stepped foot on belonging to Spain. I also had authority to aggressively search for gold and spices. These orders were given to me by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand.

Q: What do you believe these voyages did for Spain?
A: They opened doors for everyone, there was new land. It was really a great thing for anyone living at the time, there was a new area to conquer. I believe I gave people hope.

Q:Very inspiring Mr. Columbus, thank-you for your time.
A: I feel like that wasn't a question, but you're welcome.
